{The Beginning}
In a time before the Europeans searching for the Northwest passage, before pop music and brothels, there was Ankti. The land was quiet and peaceful, each animal existing in nature for the benefit of themselves and their brethren. The circle of life was as gruesome as always. The rolling hills were green, and the prairies covered in grass and trees. The Creator had made this land perfect for the Cree to thrive in, blessing them with prey such as the Caribou and rabbits. They'd been supplied with the necessities for life, but that didn't mean that the Creator was going to make life easy for them.
The climate is not easy to live in. Some years there will be no rain, leaving the grass dried and dead, forcing the animals to move elsewhere for food. The Cree were forced to follow them in pursuit of food, making them back up the buffalo hide teepees and make a treacherous migration with little more to eat than pemican. to nourish them. They are not psychic, and even the Elders cannot always speak to the spirits to help guide them. Many times the Cree population has been reduced to four people due to lack of food. There are also years when the weather will be so cold that everything remains frozen, leaving the Cree with little more to do than attempt to keep warm. Wind can also be a problem, blowing so hard that the people have to retreat into the forest to huddle behind large trees. They never know how the land will feel, leading them to doing rituals for good weather as often as they danced for a good hunt.
With the harsh winters and dry summers, the Cree need to band together to survive the heat and the snow. How long will they last? With food supplies depleting and the resources slowing in their land, movement might be necessary, but where would they go? Chief Luyu and the elders have no plans to move, at least no plans that anyone else knows of. Are the clan leaders going to drive a wedge between the tribe?
Ankti is rich with culture and tradition, ranging from the religion of the Cree to the migration of the Caribou. Never has this balance been disturbed, and never shall it be. Yet the last chief of the Cree has betrayed the Cree's beliefs and slaughtered a Caribou without purpose. He was admonished and removed from the tribe immediately, his only daughter left to take the position as chief. The Cree are keeping it together, but whispers arise. Who shall be the next to be cursed by this insanity? No one knows, but the trust in young Luyu to keep the tribe together is faltering. Female chiefs are rare, and she would not have gained the title until she married but the incident of her father's death changed things dramatically.
The rituals that have been sacred to the Crees are being lost, small bits slipping past and worrying the elders. The tribe fights to retain its traditions. Their belief in the Creator is certain. In the eyes of the elders, this is only a test of their strength of mind. As the wise of the tribe, everyone listens to them, but not all believe. The tribe must choose wisely to please their elders, keep their chief, and to evade the doubts. Will new ways erase the old? Will anyone stop this madness, or will Cree continue to lose their heritage to doubts?
The Caribou were as peaceful as ever, awaiting the next hunt from the Cree. They knew of the slaughter, but had thought it just another hunt. When word reached them though, their habit to look over their should grew. They stay together now, knowing that they don't have to outrun the Cree, just their companion in the case of a small hunt. Rumors grow as they spread through the forest, migrations are becoming optional as many Caribou choose to stay close to Cree land in the hopes of hearing the truth of the problems or staying away to avoid hunts. They cannot get too near for fear of the defective, as they refer to them, Cree attacking a Caribou. The leader of the Caribou herd is fighting hard to keep the migrations mandatory, and to keep herd alive. All of this panic is leading to still borns and Cree attacking Caribou young, an uncommon event before the defectives. The Caribou must take special measures to keep their life together.
With the Caribou afraid to even take a step, and the Cree awaiting their tribe to fall apart, the forest is crackling with tension. The slightest step might make it all collapse. Will you be the one to give Ankti the final twist that will send it spinning into turmoil? Or, will you be the one to hold it together? Wait and see.
